Into the Dark Ocean Cave!

Adventure Recap Part II

Rescuing the Villagers

The party followed the trail down to the beach side and there encountered an odd site. An Ormyrr stood sifting through the sand while a Sirine lay sunning herself across a stone nearby. The Ormyrr was looking for rare magical items while the Sirine was offering to tell futures. She gave Orcadia a bad omen about the way ahead, and warned her that trouble was sure to follow. The adventures took this to heart, but continued on bravely.

The trail ended at a half sunken ancient shrine. The ruins led down into chambers glowing with faint witch light and some areas with waist high water. As the adventurers pressed forward into the cave, they encountered the signs of some battle raging between Kuo-toa and Skum. Many times the adventurers ran into counter attacks and ambushes meant to catch the upper hand in a fierce conflict for dominance in this cave. The party learned that the Kuo-toa had originally settled in the structure, but they’d found an Abolith living inside. The Kuo-toa seemed hell-bent on sacrificing this creature to something they only enigmatically referred to as “The Leviathian”.

The party came across many twists and turns in the dark, watery killing ground. They came across a Myconid selling various powerful wares, and a group of hunting Kobolts. The party managed to parley with these creatures as opposed to bringing them outright harm. The true oddity came when they encountered a wizard who had found himself somehow lodged outside of time. This man said he’d been part of a similarly missioned adventure, though his party had met with disaster. Through magical force and the powers of Orcadia, they were able to free this wizard and convince him to help them as they continued on deeper into the cave.

Finally, they came across an unusual sight. Master Paladin Varath was trapped by some vile trickery, or so it seemed. Orcadia knew the Master, and she helped to free him. Once freed, he warned the party that the Aboleth lay ahead, and that only Paladin Orcadia and himself should go on ahead. The party tried to object, but Paladin Orcadia would not listen. They went forward, and a short time later Paladin Varath returned alone.

He revealed that he was not a paladin at all, but rather an evil spirit known as an Avunculous, a spirit that prays on the master/student relationship. It had traded the Paladin to the Aboleth in order to obtain a magical item the Aboleth had kept. He then explained that if the party would assist him in returning to the surface, he would pay them handsomely and bare witness to their contractor that the paladin had legitmately run afowl.

What would the party do?
